Explaining Sync, Independent, & Maintain Overall Duration in Rough Animator

Are you confused about what Drawing Duration setting to use in Rough Animator?

I’ll show you what each option does and which one I prefer when animating.

So stick around for today’s episode of the Expat Animator.

Quick Tips:

  • Independent
    • WHY:
      • When you don’t want anything else to be adjusted
    • PROS:
      • Gives you the most control because everything is a conscious decision (in my opinion)
    • CONS:
      • Might be more work than necessary depending on what you are trying to do
  • Sync Layers
    • WHY:
      • When you want every layer in the selected column to stay the same frame count
    • PROS:
      • Great for adding some quick anticipation time to the front and end of shots
    • CONS:
      • Might make your overall timeline go over length of shot
  • Maintain Overall Duration
    • WHY:
      • Best if your shot needs to stay at a predetermined length
    • PROS:
      • Can save you time if you are making adjustments to multiple layers
    • CONS:
      • Can limit the frames you can add, so this might be frustrating

Depending on the complexity of your shot, and how many layers it has, you will know which of these to choose. Think of them as ways to save you time. You can switch between them at any time so don’t be afraid to try one out. I normally choose to use INDEPENDENT mode as I feel it gives me the most control.
